MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY

Minimum standards for education and training are determined by the Professional Board to ensure that the interest of the public are protected.


Policy
In terms of the current policy of the Professional Board for Medical Technology the following requirements for the education and training of practitioners apply:


Medical Technologists
Persons wishing to register as Medical Technologists are required to -

  • Register as student medical technologists with the HPCSA;
  • Complete a recognised three-year National Diploma in Biomedical Technology including experiential training completed at an accredited higher education institution and accredited training laboratory;
  • Complete structured practical training (an internship) under the guidance and supervision of a suitably qualified medical technologist registered in that discipline for a minimum period of 12 months in full-time employment in an approved training laboratory (as reflected in form 75). (The syllabus for the structured training in the relevant discipline should be obtained from the SMLTSA); and
  • Successfully pass an examination conducted by the Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists of South Africa on behalf of the Professional Board.

Additional category:

Medical Technologists wishing to obtain registration in an additional category are required to:

  • Register as student medical technologists with the HPCSA ;
  • Complete structured practical training (an internship) under the guidance and supervision of a suitably qualified medical technologist registered in that discipline for a minimum period of 12 months in full time employment in an approved training laboratory (as reflected in form75). (The syllabus for the structured training in the relevant discipline should be obtained from the SMLTSA); and
  • Successfully pass an examination conducted by the Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists of South Africa on behalf of the Professional Board.

Medical Technicians

 

In order to obtain registration as a medical technician an applicant has to –

  • be appointed in a medical technician post;
  • register as student-medical technician with the HPCSA (In terms of the Rules relating to the registration of student medical technicians limited to a maximum of 4 years only);
  • complete structured practical training for a minimum period of 18 months in full-time employment (prior to the examination) in an approved training laboratory* under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner or a registered medical technologist who is registered in that discipline/category;
  • successfully complete the examination of the Professional Board; and
  • submit proof that a total of 24 months in an approved training laboratory* had been completed.

Additional category:
In order to obtain registration as a medical technician in an additional category an applicant has to:

  • Register as student medical technician with the HPCSA;
  • Complete structured practical training under the guidance and supervision of a suitably qualified medical technologist registered in that discipline in full-time employment for a minimum period of 12 months in an approved training laboratory (as reflected in form 75) (The syllabus for the structured training in the relevant discipline should be obtained from the SMLTSA); and
  • Successfully pass an examination conducted by the Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists of South Africa on behalf of the Professional Board.

Laboratory Assistants
In order to obtain registration as a laboratory assistant an applicant has to -

  • Register as student laboratory assistant with the HPCSA;
  • Complete structured practical training under the guidance and supervision of a suitably qualified medical technologist in full-time employment for a minimum period of 12 months in an approved training laboratory (as reflected in form 75) (The syllabus for the structured training in the relevant discipline should be obtained from the SMLTSA); and
  • Successfully pass an examination conducted by the Society of Medical Laboratory Technologists of South Africa on behalf of the Professional Board.

Applicants may challenge the examination upon completion of at least 18 months' training, however, registration will only be granted upon completion of at least 24 months training.



Accreditation
Educational institutions such as Universities of Technology are at liberty to offer education in Biomedical Technology. Such institutions would, however, have to apply to the Professional Board should they wish to have such qualifications recognised for registration with the Professional Board. Full particulars outlining the syllabus for such programme would have to be submitted to the Professional Board for approval.


Procedure
Institutions wishing to offer training to medical technologists after completion of the diploma or to medical technicians are required to apply in writing to the Professional Board for accreditation for the training of such students by submitting a duly compiled application as per Form 108B to the Professional Board.


Such institutions will be subjected to a thorough evaluation on the basis of a comprehensive checklist to ensure that students receive adequate exposure and that all training criteria are met.


Application Forms
Institutions wishing to apply for accreditation apply per Form 108B. Such applications are submitted to the Education Committee of the Professional Board for consideration. Evaluators appointed by the Professional Board will evaluate the institution to ensure that minimum requirements as determined by the Board are met.


Accredited Institutions
Training laboratories wishing to apply for accreditation apply per Form 108.

 


Private Practice

 

APPLICATION FOR APPROVAL TO CONDUCT A PRIVATE PRACTICE

 

 

Requirements

  1. All applications for approval to conduct a private practice have to be considered by the Professional Board.
  2. In order to comply with the requirements, an applicant has to provide proof of at least two (2) years post registration experience in the particular category of registration.
  3. The following documentation must be submitted in support of an application for approval to conduct a private practice:
    1. Form 133
    2. An original letter from the employer confirming that the person have at least two (2) years post registration experience in medical technology in the particular category.
    3. An amount of R250.00 for a Certified Extract certificate from the register for purposes of registration of a practice number at the Board of Healthcare Funders of South Africa.
